Diploma in Gender-Based Violence Studies
Course Overview
The Diploma in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is designed to provide learners with comprehensive knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence in diverse settings. The course examines the root causes of GBV, including gender inequality, power imbalances, cultural norms, and structural discrimination, while equipping participants with survivor-centered and rights-based approaches.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender or perceived gender. It arises from unequal power relationships between men and women and is rooted in social norms, discrimination, and structural inequalities. While anyone can experience GBV, women and girls are disproportionately affected worldwide.
GBV includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. It can occur in private spaces such as homes (intimate partner violence), in public spaces (sexual harassment), online (cyber violence), in workplaces, schools, or during armed conflict. Forms of GBV include domestic violence, sexual assault, child marriage, female genital mutilation, trafficking, and emotional abuse.
